ABOUT

 

Burns Middle School participates in many competitions throughout the year and has four coaches that help to prepare the students for competitions.  Students are eligible to compete in Mathematics, Social Studies, Arts & Humanities, Science, Composition, Language Arts, Future Problem Solving, and Quick Recall.  Burn's Middle School competes in the Kentucky Colonel's 6th Grade Showcase and the Governor's Cup, which is the pinnacle of the academic team season.  Students that compete at Governor's Cup will take the district level tests and if successful will proceed to the regional and state competitions.  Math Counts is another area in which students can compete.  Math Counts is a very active math program in which students compete and have the possibility of moving to state levels where college scholarships can be awarded.  Burns Middle  School has enjoyed much success in the past with the Academic Team and is looking forward to a future of more successes


 

Governor's Cup

This competition is the highpoint of our academic team season.  This competition is for 7th and 8th graders at BMS. It is divided into two parts with multiple levels of competition possible.  Students tryout to compete for each area as only 3 students can participate in each subject area in written assessment and composition.  FPS and Quick Recall consists of a 4 person team competing. Students can also only complete in a total of three areas during the Governor's Cup Competition. Students begin with a district competition and those that score high enough have the opportunity to move on to regional and then state level competition.  FPS has an International level of competition that students may advance to compete from the state level competition. The Governor's Cup season typically runs from Septebmer through March. 

 

 

Written Assessment:  Students can take a written assessment test in the subject areas of Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Arts & Humanities. Each test consists of 50 multiple choice questions with 10 tie breaker questions.  

Composition: Students are asked to complete a writing task on a specific prompt.  Similar to the on-demand writing prompts that students complete in Language Arts Classes.

 

Future Problem Solving (FPS): A nationally recognized, award winning program founded by Dr. E. Paul Torrance. The program seeks to increase an awareness for the future and encourage creativity in students of all ages. The Kentucky Association for Academic Competition (KAAC) serves as the Affiliate Program for the International FPSP in Kentucky  

Quick Recall:  consists of toss-up and bonus questions in which students are required to answer within 5 to 10 seconds.  questions come from all of the content areas tested in written exam.  those content areas are mathematics, science, social studies, language arts & arts and humanities.

Math Counts

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory.

 

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program provides the extra incentive and the perfect atmosphere for students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics.  Consisting of fun and creative problems, the MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components.  Though challenging and non-routine, the competition problems focus on the 6th through 8th grade standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.

This competition is a separate competition and all students in all grades are elgible to tryout for the mathcounts team.  

Sixth Grade Showcase



Sixth Grade Showcase is like Governor's Cup competition but only for 6th graders.  Sixth graders can compete in up to three areas: 5 different subject areas in Written assessment, composition and quick recall.  There is no advancement past 6th Grade Showcase competition.  The sixth grade season typically runs from September through December.  

Sixth Grade Junior FPS

Students may compete in 4 man teams in an FPS competition. The competition is typically held locally but competes at a regional level.  The top 10-15 (typical number of teams competing is around 65) teams advance to the Governor's cup State competition.  The local competition is held in December and the state competition is held in March.

Caitlyn Blandford came in 2nd place at International competition for her Community Project!  She worked all year on this project and placed 1st at state which gave her a chance to enter the International competition!  June 2016
